5、tperformgovernment-ownedfirms,empiricalevidenceisneededtoconfirmthistheoreticalhypothesisforbanksintransitioncountries.Theempiricalliteratureprovidesevidenceoftheinfluenceofownershipontheperformanceofindividualbanksandontheeffectivenessofthebankingsector.Inacross-countrystudy,L
6、aPorta,Lopez-De-Silanes,andShleifer(2002)findthattheperformanceofgovernment-ownedbanksisinferiortothatofprivatebanks.Claessens,Demirgüc-KuntandHuizinga(2001)investigateperformancedifferencesbetweendomesticandforeignbanksineightycountries,bothdevelopedanddeveloping,overaneight-y
