2、whichareformedsuddenly,seeminglyonnosoundbasisatall.Mostpeoplewouldsaythatsnapjudgmentsareunsoundorevendangerous.Theywouldalsoadmit,however,thattheythemselvesoftenmakesnapjudgmentsandmayfindthemtobefairlyreliable.Snapjudgments,"loveatfirstsight,""instantant
3、ipathy"andothersuddenemotionalresponses,iftakenseriously,haveusuallybeenconsideredsignsofimmaturityorlackofsense.Whensomeone"hasafeeling"aboutsomeoneelse,peoplemoreoftenlaughthanpayattention.Mostpeopleassumethatyoufindoutaboutapersonbylisteningtowhathesayso
4、veraperiodoftime.Someonemayoccasionallyremindyouthat"actionsspeaklouderthanwords,"butthisisusuallyareferencetosuchthingsaskeepingpromisesorpayingbillsorsendingmoneyhometoMother.Becausepeopleassumethat"youarewhatyousayyouare,"theydoalotoftalkinginordertobeco
5、meacquaintedwitheachother.Therearepredictabletopicswhichbusinessmen,housewives,singlesandotherswilltouchuponwhentheyfirstmeet.Later,oncetwopeoplehavegottenacquainted,theymoreorlessassumethatitwasallthatconversationthatgavethemtheirinformationabouteachother.
6、Asbehavioralsciencesdevelop,however,researchersfindthattheimportanceofspeechhasbeenoverestimated.Thoughspeechisthemostobviousformofcommunication,wedouseothermeansofwhichwemaybeonlypartiallyawareor,insomecases,completelyunaware.Itispossiblethatweareunconscio
7、uslysendingoutmessageswithoureveryaction,messageswhicharealsounconsciouslypickedupbyobserversandusedinformingopinions.Theseunconsciousactionsandreactionstothemonthepartofothersmayinpartaccountforthe"feelings"and"snapjudgments"mentionedabove.Wecommunicateagr
