2、neerwhohadbeensenttothecolonytotakechargeofthegovernmentmachineshops. WhenyoungMatzeligerwastenyearsold,hejoinedhisfatheratthemachineshopsasanapprentice.AttheageofnineteenhebecameasailoronanEastIndianmerchantship.In1876MatzeligerwenttoBoston,Massachusetts.Afterworkingthereforaye
3、ar,hemovedtoLynn,whereheremainedfortherestofhislife.Becauseofhisknowledgeofmechanicsandshoemaking,Matzeligerwasabletogetajobinashoefactory,operatingasolesewingmachine.Whileworkingthere,henoticedthattherewasnomachinethatcouldlastshoes.Hebeganhisplansforinventingashoelastingmachine
4、bycloselywatchinghand-lastersattheirwork.Inhisexperimentsheusedoldpiecesofwoodandmetal.Heevenmadehisowntools.Patientlyhetestedoneideaafteranother. Foryearshelivedinpoverty,savinghismoneyforhisproject.Fortunately,hesucceededingettingfinancialhelpfromtwobusinessmeninexchangeforatw
5、o-thirdsinterestinhisinvention.Withthisextramoney,Matzeligerfinallyachievedwhathewasafter:Alastingmachinethatcouldturnoutacompleteshoe.Hismachineindeedchangedtheshoeindustry.Itnotonlygreatlyincreasedproductionbutcutthecostofshoesbyhalf.By1889thedemandforthenewlastingmachinebecame
6、worldwide. WhatwasMatzeliger’sreward?Becauseofhislongandhardworkandthelackofproperfoodandwarmthduringhisyearsofpoverty,hishealthhadsuffered.Inthesummerof1886hecaughtacoldwhichdevelopedintotuberculosis.Forthreeyearshewassosickthathehadtoremaininbed.Finally,onAugust24,1889,hedieda
