3、idstateofidentity-theleapsthroughtime,thecollisionofcultures-thatmarkourmodernlife.Likemostfirst-timeauthors,Iwasfilledwithhopeanddespairuponthebook’spublication-hopethatthebookmightsucceedbeyondmyyouthfuldreams,despairthatIhadfailedtosayanythingworthsaying.Therealityfellsomewhereinbetween.There
4、viewsweremildlyfavorable.Peopleactuallyshowedupatthereadingsmypublisherarranged.Thesaleswereunderwhelming.And,afterafewmonths,Iwentonwiththebusinessofmylife,certainthatmycareerasanauthorwouldbeshort-lived,butgladtohavesurvivedtheprocesswithmydignitymoreorlessintact.Ihadlittletimeforreflectionove
5、rthenexttenyears.Iranavoterregistrationprojectinthe1992electioncycle,beganacivilrightspractice,andstartedteachingconstitutionallawattheUniversityofChicago.MywifeandIboughtahouse,wereblessedwithtwogorgeous,healthy,andmischievousdaughters,andstruggledtopaythebills.Whenaseatinthestatelegislatureope
6、nedupin1996,somefriendspersuadedmetorunfortheoffice,andIwon.Ihadbeenwarned,beforetakingoffice,thatstatepoliticslackstheglamourofitsWashingtoncounterpart;onelaborslargelyinobscurity,mostlyontopicsthatmeanagreatdealtosomebutthattheaveragemanorwomanonthestreetcansafelyignore(theregulationofmobileho
