2、ilityanalysisofslopes.Mostofthesemaybecategorisedaslimitequilibriummethods(Fang&Mikroudis,1991).Thegeneralapproachistoassumeafailuresurfaceanddeterminethefactorofsafetyofasoilwedgeagainstslidingusingequilibriumequations.ThebasicassumptionisthatCoulomb'sfailurecrite
3、rionissatisfiedalongtheassumedfailuresurface,andthefactorofsafetyisoftendefinedastheratioofavailableshearresistancetotherequiredshearresistance.Limitequilibriummethodscanbedividedintotwomaingroups.Thefirstgroupconsiderstheequilibriumofthewholefailingmass,assumingaf
4、ailuresurface.Thesemethodsaresuitablefortheanalysisofhomogeneoussoilsandspecificfailuresurfaces.Culmann'smethodisanexampleofthisgroup(Taylor,1984).Inthesecondgroup,aslidingwedgeor`active'massisdividedintoanumberofverticalslices,andtheequilibriumofeachindividualslic
5、eisconsidered.Thisprocedure,knownasthemethodofslices,hasbeenadaptedtoanytypeoffailuresurfaceandsoil.Fig.1illustratesthemethodandtheforcesthatactonatypicalslice.AlistofthegoverningequationsandunknownparametersinherenttotheverticalslicemethodisshowninTable1.Itcanbese
6、enthatthenumberofunknownparametersisgreaterthanthenumberofequations,andaccord-inglyitisnecessarytomakefurthersimplifyingassumptionstoreducethenumberofunknowns.Variousauthorshavepresentedverticalslicemethodsofanalysis.Theproceduresdifferprincipallyintheequilibriumre
7、quirementsthattheysatisfyandthemannerinwhichtheyhandleintersliceforces,whicharenormallydealtwithintermsofverticalandhorizontalcomponents(Sharma,1991).ThecharacteristicsandtheassumptionsinvolvedinsomeofthesemethodsareillustratedinTable2.Inadditiontoconventionalanaly
