2、sitionsbetweenprehistoryandhistory,pre-literateandliteratesocieties.Focusingonmethodologicalandtheoreticalissues,aswellasawealthofcasestudiesrangingfromRomanBritainandclassicalGreece,tocolonialAfrica,BrazilandtheUSA,thechaptersinthisbook‘answerbackfromth
3、eedge’.TheyarguethatrecentworkfocusingonthemechanismsofEuropeancolonialismandtheemergenceofacapitalistworldsystemtendstoproduceaone-sidedhistoryexcludingthediversetraditionsandpracticesthatonceshapedpeople’slives.Tocounteractthistendencytheysuggestthatth
4、epre-colonialantecedentsofmoderncapitalismandEuropeancolonialismshouldbeexplored,andthatoralandethnographicevidenceshouldbeusedinconjunctionwithwrittenandmaterialsources.Anumberofcommonthemesrunthroughthevolume,includingtherelationshipsbetweenmaterialcul
5、ture,powerandidentity,betweenthe‘local’andthe‘global’,andbetweenthepastandthepresent.However,universalizingdefinitionsofconceptssuchascolonialismorpowerandidentityhavebeenavoidedinfavourofresearchintothelocalmanifestationofthesephenomenaindiversesocialan
