3、fessorKarenTurneroftheTheCollegeofHolyCrossthate-Asiahasbeenabletoobtainthiscopyofthedrafttranslationandmakeitavailableonline.ItisclearfromcorrespondencealsofoundamongtheprojectmaterialsthatVolumeFourwastocontaintheothertables(biao)fromtheHanshu.Adraft“Forward”statesthatDubs’originalmanus

4、criptcomprisedover1000pagesoftypescript,anditmentionsseveralotherchaptersandtheirtranslators.Althoughtherewasconsiderableinterestinpublishingthevolume,theeffortfounderedupontheshoalsofDubs’insistenceonusinghis“Wade-Dubs”systemofromanizationthatwasmeanttoeliminatecompletelytheneedtouseChin

5、esecharacters.NoneofthepressesDubscontactedwaswillingtoriskpublishingaworkthatutilizedasystemthatwasnotacceptedbyothersinthefield.Thecorrespondenceseemstosuggestthattowardtheendofhislife,DubswasreluctantlywillingtoaccedetotheuseoftheWade-Gilessystem,thoughhecontinuedtoargueforthesuperiori
