3、heChinaProgramattheUniversityofWashington,andespeciallyProfessorKarenTurneroftheTheCollegeofHolyCrossthate-Asiahasbeenabletoobtainthiscopyofthedrafttranslationandmakeitavailableonline.ItisclearfromcorrespondencealsofoundamongtheprojectmaterialsthatVolumeFourwa

4、stocontaintheothertables(biao)fromtheHanshu.Adraft“Forward”statesthatDubs’originalmanuscriptcomprisedover1000pagesoftypescript,anditmentionsseveralotherchaptersandtheirtranslators.Althoughtherewasconsiderableinterestinpublishingthevolume,theeffortfounderedupon

5、theshoalsofDubs’insistenceonusinghis“Wade-Dubs”systemofromanizationthatwasmeanttoeliminatecompletelytheneedtouseChinesecharacters.NoneofthepressesDubscontactedwaswillingtoriskpublishingaworkthatutilizedasystemthatwasnotacceptedbyothersinthefield.Thecorresponde

6、nceseemstosuggestthattowardtheendofhislife,DubswasreluctantlywillingtoaccedetotheuseoftheWade-Gilessystem,thoughhecontinuedtoargueforthesuperiorityofhisown.Thedraft“Forward”statesthatunidentified“friendsofHomerDubs,inpartfromaconvictionofthevalueoftheworkandin
