2、iccultureinEuropeanmoralandpoliticalthought.ThebookbeginswithadetailedandoriginalsurveyofthereceptionofclassicalrhetoricinRenaissanceEngland.OneofthecentralteachingsoftheTudorrhetoricianswasthatthefindingsofreasonmustbereinforcedbythepowerofeloquenceiftheyaretohavetheirfullestpersuasiveeff
3、ect.ProfessorSkinnerconvin-cinglyshowshowHobbes'sconceptionofthecivilscienceswasshapedbyhischangingreactionstothisprecept,andsorescuesHobbesfromtheintellectualisolationinwhichheissooftendiscussed.Inhisearlywork,Hobbesreactedagainsthishumanisteducation,andsoughttoestablisharigorousandformal
