5、nrootedinhistoricalforcesthatgobeyondanycurrentpolicydebate.TherelationshipbetweenIslamandtheWestincludescenturiesofcoexistenceandcooperationbutalsoconflictandreligiouswars.Morerecently,tensionhasbeenfedbycolonialismthatdeniedrightsandopportunitiestomanyMuslimsandaColdWarinwh

6、ichMuslimmajoritycountriesweretoooftentreatedasproxieswithoutregardtotheirownaspirations.Moreover,thesweepingchangebroughtbymodernityandglobalizationledmanyMuslimstoviewtheWestashostiletothetraditionsofIslam.Violentextremistshaveexploitedthesetensionsinasmallbutpotentminority

7、ofMuslims.TheattacksofSeptember11,2001,andthecontinuedeffortsoftheseextremiststoengageinviolenceagainstcivilianshasledsomeinmycountrytoviewIslamasinevitablyhostilenotonlytoAmericaandwesterncountriesbutalsotohumanrights.Allthishasbredmorefearandmoremistrust.Solongasourrelation
