1、Goodafternoon.IamhonoredtobeinthetimelesscityofCairo,andtobehostedbytworemarkableinstitutions.Foroverathousandyears,Al—AzharhasstoodasabeaconofIslamiclearning;andforoveracentury,CairoUniversityhasbeenasourceofEgypt'sadvancement.Andtogether,yourepresenttheharmonybetweentraditionandprogress.
2、I'mgratefulforyourhospitality,andthehospitalityofthepeopleofEgypt.AndI'malsoproudtocarrywithmethegoodwilloftheAmericanpeople,andagreetingofpeacefromMuslimcommunitiesinmycountry:Assalaamualaykum.WemeetatatimeofgreattensionbetweentheUnitedStatesandMuslimsaroundtheworld—tensionrootedinhistori
3、calforcesthatgobeyondanycurrentpolicydebate.TherelationshipbetweenIslamandtheWestincludescenturiesofcoexistenceandcooperation,butalsoconflictandreligiouswars.Morerecently,tensionhasbeenfedbycolonialismthatdeniedrightsandopportunitiestomanyMuslims,andaColdWarinwhichMuslim—majoritycountriesw
4、eretoooftentreatedasproxieswithoutregardtotheirownaspirations.Moreover,thesweepingchangebroughtbymodernityandglobalizationledmanyMuslimstoviewtheWestashostiletothetraditionsofIslam.ViolentextremistshaveexploitedthesetensionsinasmallbutpotentminorityofMuslims.TheattacksofSeptember11,2001and
5、thecontinuedeffortsoftheseextremiststoengageinviolenceagainstcivilianshasledsomeinmycountrytoviewIslamasinevitablyhostilenotonlytoAmericaandWesterncountries,butalsotohumanrights.Allthishasbredmorefearandmoremistrust.Solongasourrelationshipisdefinedbyourdifferences,wewillempowerthosewhosowh
6、atredratherthanpeace,thosewhopromoteconflictratherthanthecooperationthatcanhelpallofourpeopleachievejusticeandprosperity.Andthiscycleofsuspicionanddiscordmustend.I'vecomeheretoCairotoseekanewbeginningbetweentheUnitedStatesandMuslimsaroundtheworld,onebasedonmutualinterestandmutualrespect,an
7、donebaseduponthetruththatAmericaandIslamarenotexclusiveandneednotbeincompetition.Instead,theyoverlap,andsharecommonprinciples—principlesofjusticeandprogress;toleranceandthedignityofallhumanbeings.Idosorecognizingthatchangecannothappenovernight.Iknowthere'sbeen
