3、heotherfeaturesofIndiansocietywhichtheydiscussedintheirvariouswritingsrangewidelyfrommarriageandfamilystructure,throughvillagecommunitiesandthesocialstructureofcities,topoliticalorganization,theeducationalsystem,economicconditions,andthefutureprogressofIndiansociety.DrMadandemonstratesthe
4、correctnessofMarx’scontentionthatthepoliticalsubordina-tionofIndiawastheonegreathindrancetothefutureprogressofIndianSociety.Hepointsout,though,thatMarxfailedtoseeclearlytheeffectsofthecastesystemoneconomicdevelopment,andshowsthatthisaspectwasmorecorrectlyassessedbyMaxWeber.Ontheotherhand,
5、inDrMadan’sview,Weber’sobservationthatIndianreligionwas‘other-worldly’andthereforeagreatobstacletoprogressinIndiansocietylackedincisiveness.Byfocusingonaneglectedaspectofthewritingsoffiveofthegreatfiguresinsociology,thebookgivesanewinsightintotheirwork,andatthesametimehighlightsmanyhither
