3、isanalternative:much"altruistic"behaviormayinfactbepurelyselfishinoriginandconsequentlyreciprocityneednotbeinvokedtoprovideaselectivebenefittotheactor.Sharingandhelpingarefundamentallydifferentbehaviorcategoriesandshouldnotbeconfused.Patternsofresourcesharinginchimpanzeescorres

4、pondtopredictionsmadebyaselfishmodelbutnottothoseofareciprocalaltruismmodel,andmanyobservationsofhumangiftexchangeareconsistentwiththeselfish,butnotthealtruistic,model.Thissuggeststhatpresumedhominidmeatexchangemayhavebeentheresultofcompetition,notaltruismorevencooperation,andt

7、lldobetterthanbyactingalone.AsconceivedbyTrivers,reciprocalaltruismismostlikelytoevolveinspecieswithlonglives,goodmemories,andviscouspopulations(thoseinwhichtwoindividualswillmeetmanytimesandremembereachother'spastbehavior).ThereareatleasttwodifficultieswithTrivers'formulation.
