4、eexplorationhasbecomeamodelforinternationalscientificcooperationandhashelpedsecurespaceasapeacefulfrontierfortheexplorationandeducationofallhumankind.ACampaignofNationalPrideWhenSovietscientistslaunchedtheworld'sfirstorbitingsatellite,"Sputnik,"in1957,
5、itignitedalreadyrampantfearsintheUnitedStatesaboutthethreatofthespreadofcommunism.InanefforttopreventtheSovietUnionfromusingspaceexplorationtogainamilitaryadvantage,theU.S.rapidlyexpandeditsownnationalspaceexplorationprogramin1958,headedbythenewly-crea
6、tedNationalAeronauticsandSpaceAdministration(NASA).Despitethefearofimminentwarwithcommunistforces,PresidentJohnF.Kennedy,whowasarguablythespaceprogram'smostardentexecutivesupporter,announcedthatspaceexplorationwouldbeapeacefulventureintendedtofosterkno
7、wledgeandscience,andnotatoolforwar.Withthisexecutiveendorsement,NASAexceededtheprogressoftheSovietUnionandestablishedtheUnitedStatesastheworld'sleaderinspaceexploration.Thespaceprogrambecameasourceofnationalpride,showingthattheU.S.couldovercomeobstacle
