4、ensionalgeneralrelativitycontainsbothEinstein'sfour-dimensionaltheoryofgravityandMaxwell'sthe-oryofelectromagnetism.Hehoweverimposedasomewhatarticialrestriction(thecylindercondition)onthecoordinates,essentiallybarringthefthoneapriorifrommakingadirectappearanceinthe
5、lawsofphysics.Klein's[2]con-tributionwastomakethisrestrictionlessarticialbysuggestingaplausiblephysicalbasisforitincompacticationofthefthdimension.Thisideawasenthusiasticallyreceivedbyunied-eldtheorists,andwhenthetimecametoincludethestrongandweakforcesbyextendin
