3、andMisner.Canonicalquantumgeneralrelativityisanattempttodeneamathematicallyrigorous,non-perturbative,backgroundindependenttheoryofLorentzianquantumgravityinfourspacetimedi-mensionsinthecontinuum.Assuchitdiersconsiderablyfromperturbativeans•atze.Itprovidesauniedtheoryofallin
4、teractionsinthesensethatallinteractionstransformunderacommongaugegroup:Thefour-dimensionaldieomorphismgroupoftheunderlyingdierentalmanifoldwhichismaximallybrokeninperturbativeapproaches.Theapproachisminimalinthatonesimplyana-lyzesthelogicalconsequencesofcombiningtheprinciple
5、sofgeneralrelativitywiththeprinciplesofquantummechanics.Asaconsequence,noextradimensions,nocorrespondingKaluza-Kleincompactications,nosupersymmetryanditsassociatedphenomenology{compatiblespontaneousbreakingatlowenergies,seemtobenecessary.Ontheotherhand,noexplanationforthepart
6、iclecontentandthedimensionoftheuniverseisprovidedbythetheory.Therequirementtopreservebackgroundindependencehasleadtonew,fascinatingmathematicalstructureswhichonedoesnotseeinperturbativeapproaches,e.g.afundamentaldiscretenessofspacetimeseemstobeapredictionofthetheorywhichisars
