3、ntisakeydeterminantofChina’seconomicgrowth,which,surprisingly,hasnotbeenrigorouslyexaminedintheliterature.Thesuperexogeneitytestresultssuggestthatthereexistsarobustorstructurallyinvariantrelationshipbetweencapitalformationandincomegrowth,therebygivingcredencetop
4、olicyevaluation.1.IntroductionSincetheestablishmentofthePeople’sRepublicofChinain1949,especiallysincethebeginningofeconomicreformsin1978,theChineseeconomyhasdisplayedsignificantprogressdespitemuchpoliticalturbulenceandpopulationpressure.Forexample,accordingtothe
5、StatisticalYearbookofChina1994,China’snationalincomeroseroughly42timesbetween1952and1993,whichcorrespondstoanannualcompoundedrateofgrowthof9%.Duringtheyearbeforeeconomicreformslaunchedin1978,itisabout5.7timeswiththeannualgrowthrateof6.9%.Thesenumbersareimpressiv
6、eevenwhencomparedwiththoseofthehighperformingeconomiessuchasHongKong,Singapore,SouthKoreaandTaiwan.ArecentreportbytheWorldBankalsoclaimsthatChinanowisoneofthefastestgrowingcountriesintheworldWorldBank,1993.Manyattemptshavebeenmadetoaccountforthisrapidgrowth;see,
