3、heinvestigationandre-useevaluationofmanyIrishboulderclaysoilspresentsdifficultiesforboththegeotechnicalengineerandtheroaddesignengineer.Theseglacialtillorboulderclaysoilsaremainlyoflowplasticityandhaveparticlesizesrangingfromclaytoboulders.Mostofourboulderclaysoilscontainvaryingproportionsofsa

4、nd,gravel,cobblesandbouldersinaclayorsiltmatrix.Theamountoffinesgovernstheirbehaviourandthesiltcontentmakesitveryweathersusceptible.Moisturecontentscanbehighlyvariablerangingfromaslowas7%forthehardgreyblackDublinboulderclayupto20-25%forMidland,South-WestandNorth-Westlightgreyboulderclaydeposit

5、s.Theabilityofboulderclaysoilstotake-infreewateriswellestablishedandpoorplanningofearthworksoftenamplifiesthis.Thefinesoilconstituentsaregenerallysensitivetosmallincreasesinmoisturecontentwhichoftenleadtolossinstrengthandrenderthesoilsunsuitableforre-useasengineeringfill.Manyofourboulderclayso
