3、anchpredictors.Asidefrombranchpredictors,sophisticatedcachehierarchieswithlargetagarraysandpredictivecacheprefetchunitsattempttohidethecomplexityofdatamovementfromthesoftware,andfurtherincreasetheperformanceofsinglethreadedapplications.Thepursuitofsinglethreadedperformancecanbeobse

4、rvedinrecentyearsintheproposalofextraordinarilydeeplypipelinedprocessorsdesignedprimarilytoincreasetheperformanceofsinglethreadedapplications,atthecostofhigherpowerconsumptionandlargertransistorbudgets.ThefundamentalideaoftheCELLprocessorprojectistoreversethistrendandgiveupthepursu

5、itofsinglethreadedperformance,infavorofallocatingadditionalhardwareresourcestoperformparallelcomputations.Thatis,minimalresourcesaredevotedtowardtheexecutionofsinglethreadedworkloads,sothatmultipleDSP-likeprocessingelementscanbeaddedtoperformmoreparallelizablemultimedia-typecomputa

6、tions.IntheexaminationofthefirstimplementationoftheCELLprocessor,thethemeoftheshiftinfocusfromthepursuitofsinglethreadedintegerperformancetothepursuitofmultiplythreaded,easilyparallelizablemultimedia-typeperformanceisrepeatedthroughout.CELLBasicsTheCELLprocessorisacollaborationbetw
