2、y.Basedonempiricaldata,thestudyfocusesontwomaindimensionsoftheLaofreightlogisticssector:(i)thedevelopmentofaprivatefreightlogisticssectorsincetheformulationoftheNewEconomicMechanism(NEM)thatprogressivelyopenedtheLaoeconomytotheworld;(ii)theLaofreightlogisticssector'sawarene
3、ssofopportunitiesandchallengesarisingfromLaoPDR'sparticipationinASEAN,GMSandhopefullytheWTOinthenearfuture.StrategicchoiceforIstanbul:Adomesticorinternationalorientationforlogistics? ThegeographicallocationofTurkeyingeneral,andIstanbulinparticular,inawiderregionencompassin
4、gtheBlackSea,Balkans,CaucasusandMiddleEastprovidesanabsoluteadvantageforthecitytobecomeanimportantinternationallogisticsnode.RecentresearchhasalsoidentifiedTurkeyasthefifthlargestlogisticsmarketintheworld.Therefore,promotingIstanbulasalogisticscenterofinternationalimportanc
5、ehasbeenhighontheagendaoftheTurkishcentralgovernment,cityauthorities,andinterestgroupsinrecentyears.Toachievethisaim,localandcentralgovernmentshavebeensponsoringnewinfrastructuralprojectstostrengthenthepositionofthecityasaworld-classlogisticscenter.However,otherresearchhasp
6、ointedtoseriousproblemsresultingfromlegislativeshortcomings,lackofcoordinationamongpublicbodies,mistakesinimplementation,andinsufficienciesininfrastructureandhumancapital.ThisarticleisbasedonaresearchprojectinvolvinglogisticsfirmsinIstanbuldesignedtoinvestigatethestrengthsa
7、ndweaknessesofIstanbulinitsquesttobecomeasalogisticscenterservingawiderregionbeyondTurkey.Theresultsoftheinterviewsandsurveyhaveshownthattoday,logisticsactivityintheMarmararegion(andIstanbulinparticular)ismainlytheresultofeconomicactivitiestakingplaceinanationalcontext,rath
