4、nsorysymbolism.Sightmaybelinkedtoreasonortowitchcraft,tastemaybeusedasametaphorforaestheticdiscriminationorforsexualexperience,anodourmaysignifYsanctityorsin,politicalpowerorsocialexclusion.Together,thesesensorymeaningsandvaluesformthesensorymodelespousedbyasociety,accord

5、ingtowhichthemembersofthatsociety'makesense'oftheworld,ortranslatesensoryperceptionsandconceptsintoaparticular'worldview.'Therewilllikelybechallengestothismodelfromwithinthesociety,personsandgroupswhodifferoncertainsensoryvalues,yetthismodelwillprovidethebasicperceptualpar

6、adigmtobefollowedorresisted.2Theemergenceofsensorystudies,asthisdynamicnewareaofinquirycouldbecalled,hascomeattheendofalongseriesofturnsinthehumansciences.Forinstance,inadditiontotheopeningsdescribedinthetext"SensoryStirrings,"(p.332)therewasthelinguisticturnofthe1960sand7
