2、increaseincomplexityandoperatingfrequenciesoftoday’sintegratedcircuitshaveenabledthecreationofsystemapplicationsoncethoughttobeimpossible.Andsystemssuchascameracellphones,automotiveinfotainmentsystems,advancedpowertraincontrollersandhandheldpersonalcomputershavebeenrealizedasaresul
3、t.Inadditiontotheincreasesinprocesstechnology,theElectronicDesignAutomation(EDA)industryhashelpedtotransformthewaysemiconductorintegratedcircuits(IC)andsubsequentsoftwareapplicationsaredesignedandverified.Thistransformationhasoccurredintheformofdesignabstraction,wheretheimplementat
4、ioncontinuestobeperformedathigherlevelsthroughtheinnovationofdesignautomationtools.Anexampleofthistrendistheevolutionofsoftwaredevelopmentfromtheearlydaysofmachine-levelprogrammingtotheC++andJavasoftwarewrittentoday.Thecreationoftheassemblerallowedtheprogrammertomovealevelabovemach
5、inelanguage,whichincreasedtheefficiencyofcodegenerationanddocumentation,butstilltiedtheprogrammertotheunderlyinghardwarearchitecture.Likewise,thedawnofC/C++compilers,debuggersandlinkershelpedtomovetheabstractionlayerfurtherawayfromtheunderlyinghardware,makingthesoftwarecompletelypl
6、atformindependent,easiertoread,easiertodebugandmoreefficienttomanage.However,ashifttohigherlevelsofsoftwareabstractionhasnottranslatedtoareductionincomplexityorhumanresources.Onthecontrary,asintegratedsystemshavebecomemorefeaturerich,thecomplexityoftheoperatingsystemandcorrespondin
