4、hattheseseawaysretreatedfromthecontinentsbackintothemajoroceanbasins.Nooneknowswhy.Overaperiodofabout100,000years,whiletheseaspulledback,climatesaroundtheworldbecamedramaticallymoreextreme:warmerdays,coolernights;hottersummers,colderwinters.Perhapsdinosaurscouldnot
5、toleratetheseextremetemperaturechangesandbecameextinct. Iftrue,though,whydidcold-bloodedanimalssuchassnakes,lizards,turtles,andcrocodilessurvivethefreezingwintersandtorridsummers?Theseanimalsareatthemercyoftheclimatetomaintainalivablebodytemperature.It’shardtounde
6、rstandwhytheywouldnotbeaffected,whereasdinosaurswerelefttoocrippledtocope,especiallyif,assomescientistsbelieve,dinosaurswerewarm-blooded.CriticsalsopointoutthattheshallowseawayshadretreatedfromandadvancedonthecontinentsnumeroustimesduringtheMesozoic,sowhydidthedino
