3、ementsforbandwidth,power,securityandmobility.Wehaveexaminedthedatathroughputsforvariousmedicaldevices,therequirementofdatafrequency,securityofpatientdataandthelogisticsofmovingpatientswhileconnectedtodevices.Thepaperdescribesanewtestedarchitecturethatallowsthisdatatobeseamlesslyintegrated

4、intoaUserInterfaceorHealthcareInformationSystem(HIS).Thedesignsupportsthedynamicadditionofnewmedicaldevicestothesystemthatwerepreviouslyunsupportedbythesystem.Toachievethis,thehardwaredesigniskeptgenericandthesoftwareinterfacefordifferenttypesofmedicaldevicesiswelldefined.Thesedevicescana

5、lsosharethewirelessresourceswithothertypesofsensorsbeingdevelopedinconjunctiononthisprojectsuchaswirelessECG(Electrocardiogram)andPulse-Oximetrysensors.MANYdevicesthatexisttodaybythebedsideinthehospitalward,intensivecareunitorotherclinicalsettinghavedataoutputfeaturesoverserialportsandoth

6、ertypesofinterfacessuchasUSB.Thesedevicesareusuallyconsideredasignificantinvestmentandareusuallypurchasedinanadhocfashionasrequiredwhenfinancebecomesavailable.Theconsequenceofthisisthatdevicesareoftenfromdifferentmanufacturersthatdon’tsupportanystandardprotocol.Thiscanmakeintegratingthese

7、devicesintoasinglenetworkdifficult.InthehospitalwardVitalSignsmonitors,VentilatorsandInfusionPumpsofmanydifferentbrandsareusuallyportableandwheeledfrompatienttopatientasrequired.Bynetworkingthesedevicesthehospitalgainsalltheadvantagesassociatedwithstoringpatientdata
