2、ctives(Greenberg,2005).Thistechnologyhasrevolutionizedhowbusinessoperatesandhowworkisdone.Ithasalsoopenedupanewavenuesandopportunitiesforindividualstomisbehave.Whiletheinternethasbroughtaboutmanybenefits,suchasreducingcosts,shorteningproducedcycletimes,facilitatinginformationaccessandma
3、rketingservicesandproductsmoreeffectively,itsnegativeeffectshavealsobeendiscussed.Negativeeffectsincludeemployees’concernsaboutprivacy,lossproductivityandorganizationalliabilityresultingfromemployee’sinboundandoutboundinternetactivities(Lim,Teo&Loo,2002).Anandarajan(2002)arguedthatinadd
4、itiontobeinganefficientbusinesstool,theinternetprovidesemployeesaccesstotheworldlargestplayground.Whilemostinternetusersfeelthatactivitiessuchaslookingupfootballscoresonthenet,oremailingtoafriendmaytakeonlyacoupleofseconds,andshouldnotposeaprobleminthebiggerschemeofthings;oftenthefewsec
5、ondsaddsuptohoursspellingaproblemforthecompany.Recentstudiesrevealedthat84%ofemployeessentnonworkrelatedemail,whileanother90%surfedtheinternetforrecreationalpurposesduringworkhours(Vault.com,1999).Thesestatisticssuggestthatcyberloafingisindeedprevalentandisapressingissuefororganizations
6、(Lim,2002).Muchofmanagement’sconcernstemsfromtheideathatcyberloafingdepletesemployees’energyandtime,thusdetractingthemfromwork.Thetermcyberslackingorcyberloafinghasbeenusedtodescribevoluntaryactsofemployeesusingtheircompanies’internetaccessfornonworkrelatedpurposesduringworkinghours(Lim
7、,2002).Scholarsgenerallyconceptualizedcyberloafingasaformofworkplaceproductiondeviance(Lim,2002;LimandTeo,2005).Thisisbecausethesecyberactivities(browsingandemailing)whichareconductedattheworkplaceduringworktimeconstituteanunproductiveuseoftimeanddetractemployeesfromcompletingt
