3、tion.Basedonsometheories,previousstudiesandtherealitiesofspokenEnglishteachinginChina,thisessayaimstodiscussspokenEnglishteachingfromtwoaspects:whattoteachandhowtoteach.1.WhattoTeach1.1CommunicativeCompetenceBeforethediscussionaboutwhattoteachinspokenEnglishclas

4、s,thereshouldbeaninsightintothelevelsofknowledgeandskillsinvolvedinlanguageuse.CanalandSwain(1980)termedtheknowledgeandskillsinvolvedinlanguageuseas“CommunicativeCompetence”,whichtheydividedintothreelevels:grammatical,sociolinguisticandstrategic.KeithJohnsonrena

5、medthefirstoneas“systematic”.Systematiccompetencecoverstheknowledgeandskillsrelatedtothewaylanguageworksasasystem.Thiscompetenceincludesknowledgeandskillsaboutpronunciation(phoneticsandphonology),grammar(morphologyandsyntax)andwordsmeanings(semantics).Evenhandwr

6、iting,spellingandpunctuationareinvolvedwhichare“mechanicalskills”.Sociolinguisticcompetencecanbefurtherdividedinto“rulesofuse”and“rulesofdiscourse”.Theformeronemeanshowtouselanguageappropriatelyindifferentcontexts.Thecontextsherecanrefertobothdifferentcountriesa
