3、fspokenEnglishteachinginChina,thisessayaimstodiscussspokenEnglishteachingfromtwoaspects:whattoteachandhowtoteach.1.WhattoTeach1.1CommunicativeCompetenceBeforethediscussionaboutwhattoteachinspokenEnglishclass,thereshouldbeaninsightintothelevelsofknowledgeandskillsinvolvedinlanguageuse.Canal

4、andSwain(1980)termedtheknowledgeandskillsinvolvedinlanguageuseas“CommunicativeCompetence”,whichtheydividedintothreelevels:grammatical,sociolinguisticandstrategic.KeithJohnsonrenamedthefirstoneas“systematic”.Systematiccompetencecoverstheknowledgeandskillsrelatedtothewaylanguageworksasasyste

5、m.Thiscompetenceincludesknowledgeandskillsaboutpronunciation(phoneticsandphonology),grammar(morphologyandsyntax)andwordsmeanings(semantics).Evenhandwriting,spellingandpunctuationareinvolvedwhichare“mechanicalskills”.Sociolinguisticcompetencecanbefurtherdividedinto“rulesofuse”and“rulesofdis
