2、uburban,semide-tachedstyle,entitledDunRoamin’(Peattie,1982).Thefactthatthetitle(andtheauthor,thepublisherandthedate)wascitedincor-rectly,indicatesthatthebookhadnotbeensomuchaslookedat.Butthat‘even’inthesentenceisthegive-away:theimplicationisthatsubur
3、banhousesdonotmeritattention.Theremarkisnothingexceptional;whenBeyondtheGatesofParisbyFrancisMaspero,withphotographsbyAnailkFrantz,waspublished,acriticforLaQuinzaineLitterairewrotethatit‘leadsusintoalandmoreexoticthanthedesertoftheTartarsorKafka’scas
4、tle,alandwhichliesonourdoorstepandwhichwe’veneverseen’(Maspero,1992).‘We’being,ofcourse,thereviewerandpresumablyhisreaderstoo,onwhomthejuxtapositionofKafka,Tartarandsuburbwouldnothavebeenlost.Butsuchobservationsaremerelyrecentexamplesofthepersistents
5、nobberythathasdiscolouredreferencestothesuburbsinEurope,andparticularlyBritain,formorethanacentury.Con-temptforthesuburbswasexpressedinthewritingsofVictorianandEdwardianauthorslikeGeorgeMooreorT.W.H.Crossland–whoregardedthe‘suburbans’as‘low,inferiors
6、pecies’.Butitwasthelatergrowthofthesuburbswhichinspiredthebitterestinvec-tive.Betweentheworldwars,halfthehousingstockofGreatBritainwasnewlybuilt,providing‘homesfitforheroes’(warveterans)andsubstantiallyreplacingtheVictorianslums.Remarkablethoughthish
7、ousingrevolutionwas,ithadnosupportersamongintellectuals.ToCyrilConnolly,theslumswere‘thebreeding-housesofcrime,butthemiddle-classsuburbsareincubatorsofapathyanddelirium’(Davis,1982).Ofthepost-warsuburbanhouses,two-thirds,orsome2700000,werebuiltinthe1
