2、.VonNeumannwasalsoactivelyinvolvedinpoliticsandsciencemanagementandhehadamajorimpactonUSgovernmentdecisionsduring,andespeciallyafter,theSecondWorldWar.Thereexistseveralpopularbooksonhispersonalityandvariouscollectionsfocusingonhisachievementsinmathematics,computerscience,
3、andeconomy.Strangelyenough,todatenodetailedappraisalofhisseminalcontributionstothemathematicalfoundationsofquantumphysicshasappeared.HonorsTheJohnvonNeumannTheoryPrizeoftheInstituteforOperationsResearchandtheManagementSciencesisawardedannuallytoanindividual(orgroup)whohav
4、emadefundamentalandsustainedcontributionstotheoryinoperationsThecratervonNeumannontheMoonisnamedafterhim.TheJohnvonNeumannCenterinPlainsboroTownship,NewJersey,wasnamedinhishonor.HonorsOnMay4,2005theUnitedStatesPostalServiceissuedtheAmericanScientistscommemorativepostagest
5、ampseries,asetoffour37-centself-adhesivestampsinseveralconfigurationsdesignedbyartistVictorStabin.ThescientistsdepictedwerevonNeumann,BarbaraMcClintock,JosiahWillardGibbs,andRichardFeynman.IllnessanddeathIn1955,vonNeumannwasdiagnosedwithwhatwaseitherboneorpancreaticcancer
6、.Hewasnotabletoaccepttheproximityofhisowndemise,andtheshadowofimpendingdeathinstilledgreatfearinhim.Hediedatage53onFebruary8,1957,attheWalterReedArmyMedicalCenterinWashington,D.C.,undermilitarysecuritylestherevealmilitarysecretswhileheavilymedicated.HewasburiedatPrinceton
