2、rwithspeaking,itisproductiveskill,throughwhichlanguagelearnersproduceoutput.AccordingtoSwain’s“OutputHypothesis”andLong’s“InteractionalHypothesis”,languagelearners’outputissignificantintheprocessofsecondlanguageacquisition(SLA).Thus,speakingcanalsofac

3、ilitatelanguageacquisition.Basedonsometheories,previousstudiesandtherealitiesofspokenEnglishteachinginChina,thisessayaimstodiscussspokenEnglishteachingfromtwoaspects:whattoteachandhowtoteach.1.WhattoTeach1.1CommunicativeCompetenceBeforethediscussionab

4、outwhattoteachinspokenEnglishclass,thereshouldbeaninsightintothelevelsofknowledgeandskillsinvolvedinlanguageuse.CanalandSwain(1980)termedtheknowledgeandskillsinvolvedinlanguageuseas“CommunicativeCompetence”,whichtheydividedintothreelevels:grammatical,

5、sociolinguisticandstrategic.KeithJohnsonrenamedthefirstoneas“systematic”.Systematiccompetencecoverstheknowledgeandskillsrelatedtothewaylanguageworksasasystem.Thiscompetenceincludesknowledgeandskillsaboutpronunciation(phoneticsandphonology),grammar(mor

6、phologyandsyntax)andwordsmeanings(semantics).Evenhandwriting,spellingandpunctuationareinvolvedwhichare“mechanicalskills”.Sociolinguisticcompetencecanbefurtherdividedinto“rulesofuse”and“rulesofdiscourse”.Theformeronemeanshowtouselanguageappropriatelyin

7、differentcontexts.Thecontextsherecanrefertobothdifferentcountriesandsomeconcretesituations(e.g.wedding&funeral;restaurants&shops).Indifferentcountrieswithdifferentcultureandcustoms,speakersshouldobeylocal“rules”tousethelanguage.Thesamegoestodifferentc
