3、ratedintheU.S.until1907,thereweredayshonoringmotherseveninthedaysofancientGreece.Inthosedays,however,itwasRhea,theMotherofthegodsthatwasgivenhonor.Later,inthe1600's,inEnglandtherewasanannualobservancecalled“MotheringSunday”.ItwascelebratedduringJune,onthefou
4、rthSunday.OnMotheringSunday,theservants,whogenerallylivedwiththeiremployers,wereencouragedtoreturnhomeandhonortheirmothers.Itwastraditionalforthemtobringaspecialcakealongtocelebratetheoccasion.IntheU.S.,in1907AnnaJarvisfromPhiladelphia,beganacampaigntoestabl
5、ishanationalMother'sDay.Jarvispersuadedhermother'schurchinGrafton,WestVirginatocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother'sdeath,the2ndSundayofMay.ThenextyearMother'sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.Jarvisandothersbeganaletter-writingcampaigntom
6、inisters,businessmen,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Theyweresuccessful.PresidentWoodrowWilson,in1914,madetheofficialannouncementproclaimingMother'sDayanationalobservancethatwastobeheldeachyearonthe2ndSundayofMay.Manyothercountrieso
