2、eevenmoreimportantcontributionstoChinesegrowth.Between2001and2005,forexample,thedollarvalueofChineseexportsandimportsincreasedatannualratesof29.3and25.3percentrespectivelyandin2005,58percentofChineseexportsoriginatedfromforeignownedfirm.Asaresultofthisperformance,China’ss
3、hareinworldimportsincreasedfrom3.3in2001to5.9percentin2004anditsshareinworldexportsfrom3.9percentin2001to6.5percentin2004.ThismakesChinaamajorparticipantinworldtradeandhavingnowsurpassedJapan,thedominanttradingpowerinEastAsiaChinaloomsparticularlylargeasanexporteroflabor-
4、intensivemanufacturedgoodsandcomponentsandasamajorimporterofcapitalgoods,primarycommoditiesandsemi-finishedparts.Itisalsothedevelopingworld’slargestrecipientofdirectforeigninvestment.Givenitssize,thepaceofitsexpansion,anditsoutwardorientation,Chinaislikelytohaveagrowingim
5、pactontheglobaltradingsystemanditspoliciesarelikelytohaveanimportantinfluenceonthesystem’sevolution.Thesepolicieshavebeenasdynamicasitstradeandinvestmentperformance.In2001afterfourteenyearsofnegotiations,ChinabecameafullmemberoftheWTO,assumingobligationsthatareatthelevelo
6、fmanydevelopedeconomies.Sincethattimeithasparticipatedactivelyintheinstitution’sactivitiesandnegotiations.Inparttomeettheconditionsofitsaccession,Chinahasalsodramaticallyliberalizeditsdomesticeconomyandintroducedalargenumberofinternalpoliciesthatconsolidateitstransitionto
7、amarketeconomy.Inaddition,Chinahasadoptedamulti-tracktradepolicystrategy,complementingitsWTOanddomesticliberalizationpolicieswithregionaltradinginitiatives.By2005,ChinahadcompletedfourFTAagreements(Thailandin2003,HongKongandMacaoin2004andChilein2005)andasestimatedbyWongan
