4、rnLand.CookledtwoshipsandheadedtoCapeTowninJuly,1772.HeproceededsouthfromAfricaandturnedaroundafterencounteringlargeamountsoffloatingpackice.Actuallyhecamewithin75milesoftheAntarcticaatthattime.ButhefoundnohabitablesoutherncontinentandarrivedbackinBritaininJuly,1775.TheThirdVoyage.TheNavywantedCook

5、todetermineiftherewasaNorthwestPassage，amythicalwaterwaybetweenEuropeandAsiaacrossthetopofNorthAmerica.CooksetoutinJulyof1776androundedthesoutherntipofAfricaandheadedeastacrosstheIndianOceanuntilhisnavigationoftheBeringSeawasstoppedbytheimpassibleArcticice.Uponyetagaindiscoveringthatsomethingdidnot
