2、-8521,JapanbSSupportingInformationABSTRACT:Wedevelopedanovelphotochemicaltechniqueforpreparationofceria(CeO2)nanocrystalsinsimpleaqueoussolutioncontainingonlyCe(NO3)3,wherenoadditiveandnoheatingarerequired.UnderUVlightillumination,photochemicalreductionofNO3resultedinformationofNO2accompa
3、niedbyhydroxylradicals3þ(3OH)asintermediatespecies.ThehydroxylradicalscouldoxidizeCetotetravalent2þstate(Ce(OH)2),thenCeO2nucleiwereformedthroughdeprotonation.TheaqueousCeO2solwaspreparedviadialysisofthereactedsolutionagainstdeionizedwatertoremovetheexcesselectrolyte.Sincethephotooxidationp
4、rocesshomoge-neouslyoccursovertheentiresolutionduetohighopticaltransmittanceofthesolvent,theparticlesizedistributionbecomesrelativelynarrowandthemeandiametercanbeeasilycontrolledbyadjustingtheinitialconcentrationofCe(NO3)3.ThepreparedCeO2nanoparticleswerepotentagainstoxidativepolymerization
5、ofphenolicderivatives(guaiacol)atroomtemperature.ThispaperclarifiesthephotochemicalformationmechanismofCeO2nanocrystalsintheCe(NO3)3solution,andtheadvantagesoftheproposedmethodarediscussedindetail.’INTRODUCTIONcanbeapplicableforvariousresearchandindustrialfields.Light3þAswell-known,ceriumisab
6、undantinnatureamongrare-earthirradiationtoCesaltsolutionbringsaboutformationofCeO23þnanoparticlesunderpresenceofphoto-oxidizer.Asaresult,Ceelements,anditsoxide(ceria,CeO2)anddopedoxideshavebeenIVistransformedintoCestatebythelightenergyandsubse-widelyemployedforvariousapplicationsduetotheiru
7、niqueproperties.Forexample,theirnanocrystals(nanoparticles)havequentlyformsinto(hydrated)CeO2nanoparticles.Inthisstudy,1weemploynitrateionsasphoto-oxidizingagentsinceultravioletattractedattentionascocatalystsfornoblemetals,ultravioletlight23(UV)lightirra
