5、ementmethods.First,itallowsadirectapproximationofthestresseswhichusuallyarethevariablesofprimaryinterest.Second,acorrectlydesignedmixedmethod(i.e.satisfyingtheequilibriumcondition,seebelow)givesagoodmodellingofincompressibleandnearlyincompressiblematerialsforwhichstandarddi
6、splacementmethodsbreakdown.Third,theapproachhasbeenshown[4,16]tobeefficientforplasticityproblems,forwhichtheeliminationofthestressesfromtheequilibriumandconstitutiveequationsisdifficult.Ithas,however,turnedouttobedifficulttofindgoodmixedmethods.Adirectapproachofusinge.g.con
