3、tudentsexaminedfactorsthatpredictforeignlanguageanxiety.Asetwisemultipleregressionanalysisrevealedthatsevenvariables(i.e.,age,academicachievement,priorhistoryofvisitingforeigncountries,priorhighschoolexperiencewithforeignlanguages,expectedoverallaverageforcurrentlanguagecourse,per
4、ceivedscholasticcom-petence,andperceivedself-worth)contributedsignificantlytothepredictionofforeignlanguageanxiety.Ananalysisofvariance,whichincludedtrendanalysis,revealedthatfreshmenandsopho-moresreportedthelowestlevelsofforeignlanguageanxiety,andthatanxietylevelsincreasedlinearl
5、yasafunctionofyearofstudy.Theeducationalimplicationsofthesefindingsforunderstand-ingforeignlanguageanxietyandforincreasingforeignlanguagelearningarediscussed,asaresuggestionsforfutureresearch.Enrollmentinaforeignlanguageclassincreasinglyisbecominganessentialpartofacollegestudent's
6、programofstudy(Horwitz,Horwitz,&Cope,1986).Asaresult,aninfluxofstudentswithdiversebackgrounds,interests,andaspira-tionshaveenrolledinforeignlanguagecoursesinordertofulfilldegreerequire-ments.Unfortunately,takingsuchcoursescanbeanintimidatingexperienceforsomestudents,withmanyreport
7、ingseveredifficulties,culminatinginunder-achievementanddisaffection.Indeed,somestudentschangetheiracademicma-jorsand/orcareergoalsasadirectresultoftheirexperiencesintheseclasses(Horwitzetal.,1986).Infact,Young(1991)observedthatmanystudentsdelaytakingaforeignlanguagecourseforaslong
