3、inga10dayincubation),meanedfortensoils.TherewasacloserelationshipbetweenmicrobialbiomassC,measuredbyfumigation-inaction(fromthe~iationshipBiomauC=Fc10.45)andEC,givenbytheequation:BiomassC=(2.64f0.060)E,thataccountedfor99.2%oftbevarianceinthedata.Thisrelationshipheldove
4、rawiderangeofsoilpH(X9-8.0).ATPandmicrobialbiomassNconcentrationsweremeasuredinfourofthesoils.The(ATP)/(Ec)ratioswereverysimilarinthefoursoils,suggestingthatbothATPandtheorganicCrendereddecomposablebyCHQ,camefromthesoilmicrobialbiomass.TheC:Nratioofthebiomassinastrongl
5、yacid(pH4.2)soilwasgreater(9.4)thaninthethreeless-acidsoils(meanC:Nratio5.1).WeproposethattheorganicCrenderedextractableto0.5MK,SO,aftera24hCHC&fumigation(E,)comesfromthecellsofthemicrobialbiomassandcanbeusedtoestimatesoilmicrobialbiomassCinbothneutralandacidsoils.I~RO
