5、lantlitterfallonannualvariationofsoilmicrobialbiomassincontrolandlitter-excludedplotsinatropicalwetforestofPuertoRico.Wealsomeasuredsoilmoisture,soiltemperature,andplantlitterfallinthesetreatmentplots.Abovegroundplantlitterinputhadnoeffectonsoilmicrobia
6、lbiomassoronitspatternoffluctuation.Monthlychangesinsoilmicrobialbiomasswerenotsynchronizedwithabovegroundlitterinputs,butratherpreceededlitterfallbyonemonth.Soilmicrobialbiomassdidnotcorrelatewithsoiltemperature,moisture,orrainfall.Ourresultssuggestthat
7、changesinsoilmicrobialbiomassarenotdirectlyregulatedbysoiltemperature,moisture,orabovegroundlitterinputatlocalscaleswithinatropicalwetforest,andtherewereasynchronousfluctuationbetweensoilmicrobialbiomassandplantlitterfall.Potentialmechanismsforthisasynch
8、ronousfluctuationincludesoilmicrobialbiomassregulationbycompetitionforsoilnutrientsbetweenmicroorganismsandplants,andregulationbybelow-groundcarboninputsassociatedwiththeannualsolaranddrying-rewettingcyclesintropicalwetforests.Abb
