3、mstoinvestigatesuchvariabilityandtoidentifystablerelationshipswithitspotentialdriversintheclimatesystem;suchrelationshipsmaybeusedasthebasisforthestatisticaldown-scalingofclimatemodeloutputs,forexample.Theanalysisusesgeneralizedlinearmodels(GLMs).TheGLMsarefittedtotwentieth

4、-centuryobservationaldatafortheperiod1957–2006tocharacterizethede-pendenceofmonthlyprecipitationoccurrencesandamountsupontheclimateindicatorsofinterest.Incontrastwithmanyoftheanalysesthathavepreviouslybeenusedtoinvestigatecontrolsonprecipitationintheregion,GLMsallowforthei

5、nvestigationoftherelationshipsbetweendifferentcomponentsoftheclimatesystem(geographicalandclimaticdrivers)simultaneously.Sixclimatefactorswerefoundtodrivepartoftherainfallvariabilityintheregion,andtheirmodeledeffectuponrainfalloccurrencesandamountsresultedingeneralagreemen

6、twithpreviousstudies.Amongtheretainedindices,relativehumidityandElNin˜oaccountedforthehighestdegreeofexplainedvariability.Thelocationandintensityofthejetstreamwerealsofoundtohaveastatisticallysignificantandphysicallymeaningfuleffectuponrainfallvariability.1.Introductioninth
