2、restheusagesofChinesenon-canonicalverbalclassifierphrases(non-CVClphrasesforshort)andthenmakesacontrastivestudyonChinesenon-CVClphrasesandrelevantEnglishconstructions(RECsforshort)thataresemanticallyandfunctionallysimilartotheChinesenon-CVClphrases.ThefeaturesofChinesenon-CVClphrasesha

3、venotbeeninvestigatedsystematicallyinpreviousstudies.Thispapermakesadetailedanalysisofthesemanticfeaturesandsyntacticdistributionofthesephrases.Itisfoundthatinadditiontoquantifyingevents,non-CVClphrasescanalsoservetheindividuationfunctionoftransformingeventtypesintoeventtokens.Besides,

4、non-CVClphrasesarealsoofanominalcharacter,whichaccountsfortheirrelativelystrongreferentialfunctionasopposedtotheirweakdeclarativefunction.Inaddition,thediversifiedsyntacticdistributionofnon-CVClphrasesisalsodiscussedinthispaper.WiththehelpofChineseandEnglishparallelcorpusandonlineresou

5、rces,thispaperattemptstofindouttheRECssemanticallyandfunctionallyanalogoustoChinesenon-CVClphrasesandclassifytheseRECsintodifferentgroups:lightverbconstructions,cognateobjectconstructions,doubleobjectconstructionsandnominalandverbalexpressions.Ananalysisisalsomadeofthefeaturesofthesecl

6、assesofEnglishconstructionsorexpressions.ItisfoundthatmostoftheRECsarerelatedtoeventnounstosomedegree.Groundedontheabovediscussion,thispaperconductsacontrastivestudyoftheChinesenon-CVClphrasesandtheRECs,aimingtobringoutthedifferencesbetweenthemintermsofphrasestructure,semanticmeaningan

7、dsyntacticdistribution.Thefactorsresultinginthesedifferencesareanalyzedfromacognitiveperspective.ItisproposedthatthedifferencesbetweentheChineselanguageandtheEnglishlanguageatlargeinperspectivepositioningandprominenceselection,cognitivemechanismandscanningmodeconstitutetheunderlyingr
