3、temberexportsofgoodshadgrownby12.3percent.Theimprovementinexportperformancewasaccompaniedbyadrasticchangeinrelativepricesfollowinguponthecurrencydevaluationin2002whichhassignificantlyimprovedthecompetitivenessofArgentineexportsoverall.Aggregateexportstatisticsshowthatthemomentumofexportperformance
4、hasbeensustainedbymanufacturedgoodswhichledexportsgrowthin2006.Lookingbeyondaggregatetrends,thispaperexamineschangesinthestructureofArgentineexports,andtheirpotentialimpactonfuturegrowth.Tothatend,weapplytheconceptualframeworkdevelopedinHausmannandRodrik(2003)andHausmann,HwangandRodrik(2006)(HHR).
5、Theydefinethe“productivityfrontier”ofacountryastheoptimalcompositeofexportsthatwouldmaximizeprospectivefuturegrowth.Countriesthatfallshortoftheproductivityfrontierhavetwobasicchannelsthroughwhichtheycangrow.First,countriescangrowbyproducingmoreofthesamegoodstheyhavealreadybeenproducing.Second,andm
6、oreinterestingly,countriescanimprovetheirgrowthprospectsbydevelopingnewproductsthatshiftthemclosertotheirproductivityfrontier.TheanalysisofHHRrevealsthat,ifnewproductshaveahighproductivity(i.e.theytendtobeproducedbycountrieswithhigherlevelsofincomepercapita)thentheGDPofthecountryproducingandexport
