4、perexaminestherelationshipbetweenexecutivecashcompensationandcompanyperformanceforasampleoflargeUKcompaniesovertheperiod1994-2002.ThisrelationshipisexaminedagainstabackgroundofaseriesofreportsintocorporategovernancemechanismsinUKcompanies.WeshowthatbasepaycompensationofUKexecutiveshasincrea
5、sedsubstantiallyoverthisperiod,andweprovideevidenceonthemovementinthepay-performancesensitivityovertime.Weidentifyanasymmetricrelationshipbetweenpayandperformance:inyearsandforcompaniesinwhichstockreturnsarerelativelyhigh,pay-performanceelasticitiesarehigh,butwefindthatexecutivepayislesssen
6、sitivetoperformanceinthosecaseswhenstockreturnsarelow.Thissuggeststhatoverallthereislittlerelationshipbetweenpayandperformance.Wealsoexploretheheterogeneityofthepay-performancerelationshipacrossfirms,andfindthatboardstructure,firmsize,industryandfirmriskareallsignificantdeterminantsofexecut
