1、AspectualStructureandtheSyntaxofChineseDurativePhrasesLiao,Wei-wenNationalTsingHuaUniversitylwwroger@ms48.hinet.net1.IntroductionThisarticlelooksintotheaspectualstructurethroughthedifferentinterpretationsofthedurativephrasesinChinese.Iproposethataspectsho
2、uldbedecomposedintothreelayersofrepresentations,anapproachthatIcalltheThree-layerdAspectualStructure(henceforth,TAS).ThisproposalissimilartotheproposalofTenny’s(2000),whichalsoarguesforthreesyntacticpositionsforaspect.ThispaperarguesthatChineseprovidesstr
3、ongevidenceforsuchaclaim.Firstofall,eachofthethreeaspectuallayersismorphologicallyrealizedinChinese.Second,thedurativephrasesinChinesecanbeinterpretedinthreedistinctways,correspondingtothethreeaspectuallayers(Liao2004).Therefore,asyntax-semanticsmappingis
4、atworkbetweentheinterpretationsofthedurativephrasesandtherepresentationsofaspectualstructure.Section2reviewsthetheoriesofaspectbyReichanbach(1947),Hornstein(1990),Smith(1991),andKlein(1994).Iconcludethataspectshouldbedecomposedintothreelevelsofrepresentat
5、ions.Thefirst(alsothelowest)levelisthelexico-compositionallevel,theinformationofwhichisprovidedbytheinherentpropertiesofverbsandcombinationoflexicalitems.Thesecondlevelistheviewpointlevel,wherethelexicalaspectisconfinedwithinagiventopictimeinspecificways,
6、inthesenseofKlein(1994).Thethird(highest)level,beingmorefunctionalandtense-related,iscalledthetemporalaspect,wherethetemporalstructureispunctualizedintoapointrelativetoareferencepointoftime.Section3providessupportingevidenceforTAS:theinterpretationsofthed
7、urativephrasesinChinese.Liao(2004)pointsoutthatthedurativephrasesinChinesecanhavethreekindsofinterpretations,correspondingtothethreelevelsofaspectualrepresentation.ThethreekindsofinterpretationsaretheTargetState-relatedreading(TS-related,measuringthetarge
8、tstate),theProcess-relatedreading(P-related,measuringtheprocess),andtheReferenceTime-relatedreading(RT-related,measuringthetimefromagivenpointtothereferencetime,seebelow).Thefollowingthreeexamplesillustratethesethre
