4、ccepted13August2009humidityprobeswasdesignedforthispurpose.ThewaterretentionpropertieswerestudiedunderbothAvailableonline21August2009confinedandunconfinedconditions;theresultsshowthatathighsuctions(>4MPa)thewaterretentioncapacityisindependentoftheconfiningcondition
5、,andbycontrast,atlowsuctions(<4MPa)theconfinedKeywords:conditionresultedinsignificantlowwaterretention.Furthermore,themicrostructurewasinvestigatedatGMZbentoniteSimultaneousprofilemethodmercuryintrusionporosimetry(MIP)andEnvironmentalScanningElectronMicroscope(ESEM
6、)inInfiltrationcelldifferentstates:onoven-driedpowder,bentoniteslurry,as-compactedandwettedsamples.IthasbeenConstantvolumeconditionobservedthatthesoilpowderisconstitutedofaggregatesofvarioussizes;theseaggregatesaredestroyedHydraulicconductivitybyfullsaturationata
7、watercontentequaltotheliquidlimit;compactionattheinitialwatercontentof11–312%andadrydensityof1.7–1.75Mg/mledtoamicrostructurecharacterizedbyadenseassemblyofrelativelywellpreservedaggregates;saturationofthecompactedsampleunderconstantvolumeconditiondefinedanon-hom
