3、ingporefluidswithdifferentsaltconcentrations.Electricalconductivitymeasurementswereperformedonthesqueezedporewateraftershearingtoquantifychangesinsalinityofthesoilporewater.Strengthparametersshowedacleardependencyoftheporefluid.Changesinc’and’appeartobecontrolledbytwofa
4、ctors:(i)initialsalinity,and(ii)extentoftheconcentrationgradient.Resultsfrommercuryintrusionporosimetrytestsdemonstratedtheinfluenceofchangesinporewatersalinityontheevolutionofthedominantporesize.Itwasinagreementwithmacroscopicobservations.Implicationsforfurtherlaborator
5、ytestingarehighlightedinthepaper.INTRODUCTIONNaturalestuarinesoftclaystypicallybearsomeimprintsofthecomplexgeologicalandgeochemicalenvironmentswheretheyhavebeenformed.Alterationoftheseenvironmentsmaysignificantlyaltertheirphysicalandmechanicalpropertieswhicharealsoaffect
6、edbymechanical,hydraulic,thermalandchemicalactions.Itaddsadditionalchallengesforgeotechnicalpractitionersdealingwithsettlementandstabilityanalysisofgeotechnicalstructuresfoundedonthosematerials.Ballinaclay,asoftestuarineclayfromtheRichmondRivervalleyinnorthernNewSouthWal
