2、lthatiscapableofrepresentingtheinteractionbetweenßexuralductilityandmasonryshearstrengthtoaccountforthereductioninshearstrengthasductilitylevelincreases.Thesimplemethodproposedhereallowsthestrengthenhancementprovidedbyaxialcompressionloadtobeseparatedfromthemasonrycompon

3、entofshearstrengthandisconsideredtoresultfromstrutaction.Inaddition,minormodiÞcationsaremadetofacilitateadoptionofthemethodintheupdatedversionoftheNewZealandmasonrydesignstandard,NZS4230:2004.PredictionofshearstrengthfromNZS4230:2004andalternativemethodsarecomparedwithre

4、sultsfromawiderangeofmasonrywallstestsfailinginshear.ItwasestablishedthattheshearequationintheformerversionoftheNewZealandmasonrystandardNZS4230:1990wasoverlyconservativeinitspredictionofmasonryshearstrength.ThecurrentNationalEarthquakeHazardsReductionProgramNEHRPshe

5、arexpressionwasfoundtobecommendable,butitdoesnotaddressmasonryshearstrengthwithinplastichingeregions,thereforelimitingitsusewhendesigningmasonrystructuresinseismicregions.Finally,thenewshearequationimplementedinNZS4230:2004wasfoundtoprovidesigniÞcantlyimprovedshearstreng
