1、AbstractWillardVanOrmanQuine(1908-2000)wasanoutstandingAmericanphilosopher,thmathematician,andlogicianintheanalytictraditioninthelatterhalfofthe20century.Quine‟sthesisofindeterminacyoftranslationhaspuzzledalargecircleofphilosophersformorethan50years.Quine‟sthesis,undoubtedly,isamongthebest-knowna
2、ndmost-disputedthesesincontemporaryphilosophy;andthus,itisofnodifficultyforreaderstofindtheinterpretationsofQuine‟sthesisofindeterminacyoftranslationeverywhere.Unquestionably,thereisnodeterminatesolutiontoanyphilosophicalproblem.Quine‟sthesiscouldbeinterpretedindivergentwaysbydifferentreaders.The
3、remightevenbetwoQuinesinonereader‟seyesatthesametime.Itisnowonder,therefore,thatsuchinterpretationsaswhatQuine‟sthesisofindeterminacyoftranslationis,howitrelatestoQuine‟sotherrelevanttheses,andwhatitderivesfrom,varyastimeandreadersdiffer.PhilosophicalinterpretationofQuine‟sthesisofindeterminacyof
4、translationinthispaperistotallybasedonQuine‟sauthenticworks.Ontheonehand,itmayhelpreadersgetridofcertainprejudiceagainstQuine‟sthesisbymeansofdissipatingtheirmisinterpretations;inthemeantime,itmayenablereaderstounderstandthisthesisinmoredepthatahigherlevel.Tobespecific,Quine‟sthesisofindeterminac
5、yoftranslationcanbecomparedtoapoint.Ifwewouldliketoobtainarelativelycomprehensivephilosophicalinterpretationofthispoint,therearetworequirements.Thefirstrequirementisthatrelationsofthispointwithotherrelevantpointshavetobeclarified,inotherwords,horizontalphilosophicalinterpretationofthisthesisisreq
6、uired.Inthispaper,therelationsbetweenthethreedoctrinesofindeterminacyaremadeclear:(1)amongthethreeindeterminacies(indeterminacyoftranslation,indeterminacyofmeaning,andindeterminacyofreference),indeterminacyofmeaningisthelogicalstartingpoint;(2)indeterminacyoftranslationcanbegradedintothreetypesac
