2、rsonalcommunicationstoshoppingactivities.Thepaperhasbeenbasedonthefollowingtwobasichypotheses:(1)TheChinesecultureisgenerallybelievedtobecollectivelyorientedwhiletheAmericanindividuallyoriented.Thetwosocietiesaredifferentandthereforeitishypothesizedth

3、atthediscourserealizationpatternsofrefusalstrategiesmightvaryfromonecountrytoanother,althoughtheroleandnatureofthespeechactofrefusingmightbeuniversallysimilar.(2)Registersarelanguagevarietiesappropriateforuseinparticularspeechsituations,whichareconcer

4、nedwiththeaddresser’sandtheaddressee’srelationshipstothediscoursefield,modeandtenor.Sincetheregisterofshoppingactivitiesisdifferentfromthatofinterpersonalcommunications,itishypothesizedthatthediscourserealizationpatternsofrefusalstrategiesmightvaryfro

5、moneregistertoanother.Thepaperhasbeendividedintofourchapters.Chapteroneservesasageneralreviewofthetheoryofcontrastivestudyandthefindingsofcontrastivestudyofrefusalstrategiesininterpersonalcommunicationsdrawnbythescholarsbothathomeandabroad.Itishopedth
