5、nglargefirmsfrom1919to1979.Fivetheoriesareinitiallyproposedaspossibleexplanationsforthechangesobservedandthesetheoriesareoperationalizedandtested.Themodelthatseemsmostconsistentwiththedataemphasizestheabilityofkeyactorstoalterstructureunderthreecircumstances:whenthefirmhasaproduct-relatedor-unr

6、elatedstrategy(whichisconsistentwithChandler's[1962]theorizing);whenthecorporatepresidentshaveabackgroundinsalesorfinance;andwhenotherfirmsintheindustryaltertheirstructures.Theimplicationsoftheseresultsfortheoriesoforganizationalchangearediscussedwithspecialreferencetotheimportanceofconceivingh
