3、einaprescribedrangeandtoexhibitovershootandsteady-statetemperatureerroroflessthan1degreeKelvinintheactualchambertemperaturestepresponse.Thedetailsofthedesigndevelopedbythisgroupofstudents,basedonaMotorolaMC68HC05familymicrocontroller,aredescribed.The

4、pedagogicalvalueoftheproblemisalsodiscussedthroughadescriptionofsomeofthekeystepsinthedesignprocess.Itisshownthatthesolutionrequiresbroadknowledgedrawnfromseveralengineeringdisciplinesincludingelectrical,mechanical,andcontrolsystemsengineering.1Intro

5、ductionThedesignprojectwhichisthesubjectofthispaperoriginatedfromareal-worldapplication.AprototypeofamicroscopeslidedryerhadbeendevelopedaroundanOmegaTMmodelCN-390temperaturecontroller,andtheobjectivewastodevelopacustomtemperaturecontrolsystemtorepla

6、cetheOmegasystem.Themotivationwasthatacustomcontrollertargetedspecificallyfortheapplicationshouldbeabletoachievethesamefunctionalityatamuchlowercost,astheOmegasystemisunnecessarilyversatileandequippedtohandleawidevarietyofapplications.Themechanicalla

7、youtoftheslidedryerprototypeisshowninFigure1.Themainelementofthedryerisalarge,insulated,air-filledchamberinwhichmicroscopeslides,eachwithatissuesampleencasedinparaffin,canbesetoncaddies.Inorderthattheparaffinmaintaintheproperconsistency,thetemperatur
